The current COVID-19 crisis has brought into sharp relief the inadequacy of Africa and India’s healthcare infrastructure—including access to energy—especially in the case of the rural poor. WHO notes that 70 percent of medical devices cannot be used in developing countries due to unreliable power supply. https://www.powerforall.org/insights/impact/energy-equity-right-healthcare
India is the world’s largest single market for providing energy access, with 304 million people or 43 million households officially still unelectrified (depending on the data source). The government has targeted 2022 for 24x7 nationwide electrification. The problem is massive, but so is the opportunity for decentralized renewable energy (DRE). https://www.powerforall.org/resources/infographics/infographic-india-48-billion-annual-energy-access-opportunity
As one the world’s leading mini-grid markets, India can scale the role of private rural utilities to help meet domestic and international energy access challenges. In the first of two fact sheets, we look at the current state of the Indian mini-grid sector and the challenges it faces. https://www.powerforall.org/resources/fact-sheets-research-summaries/fact-sheet-mini-grids-india
Decentralized renewables have the potential to directly create up to 190,000 formal, and 210,000 informal jobs in India by 2022-23. https://www.powerforall.org/news-media/articles/first-annual-energy-access-jobs-census-released-showing-large-employment-opportunity
In Uganda, we hosted a kick-off of a national platform for strengthening the link between food and productive use of energy. Our India team convened a communications workshop with leading journalists in Jharkhand state, and organized the third installment of Energy Catalyst's "Lessons from the Frontline" series. Also, we will participate in Uganda Power Forum 2020 to highlight our integrated electrification initiative. https://www.powerforall.org/news-media/campaign-updates/campaign-update-november-2020
Nearly 38 million people in the state of Jharkhand, India, do not have access to critical and basic health services. Decentralized Renewable Energy can empower the 4000 rural health centers with reliable electricity, which will ensure quality health care for all in the state. https://www.powerforall.org/resources/fact-sheets-research-summaries/fact-sheet-solarizing-rural-health-centers-jharkhand
India has seen rising investment in mini-grids, which can help accelerate India’s universal energy access goals. In our second fact sheet on India mini-grids, we explore the different business models being deployed in India, with their successes and challenges. https://www.powerforall.org/resources/fact-sheets-research-summaries/fact-sheet-india-mini-grids
In 2019, India announced the completion of the Saubhagya Initiative, its program to provide electricity connections to every village and every home in the country. However, even though millions more are now connected, problems remain (and new ones have emerged), including unreliable supply of power, a lack of workforce capacity for utilities (DISCOMs) to serve an expanded customer base and additional stress of fiscal health. https://www.powerforall.org/insights/asia/4-insights-whats-next-india-rural-electrification
We supported Energy Catalyst to launch a new online energy access innovation community. In Uganda, we participated in Power Forum 2020 while in India, our team co-hosted the first meeting of the Jharkhand DRE collective.
